WhatsApp back-in-stock alerts for Shopify variants

A shopper subscribes to a specific out-of-stock variant. Morasel rechecks inventory at your configured locations immediately before sending, and sends exactly one alert per subscription — never a guess based on a stale webhook.

What breaks with a naive restock alert

Alerting on an inventory webhook alone tells shoppers a variant is back when it isn't really sellable, or floods them with repeat messages for the same restock.

  • An inventory count ticks up at a warehouse that never sells to that customer's location, and the shopper still gets an alert
  • The webhook fires before the count settles, so the alert goes out and the variant is gone again minutes later
  • The same shopper gets a second alert for a restock they already heard about
  • A shopper who subscribed to one size or color gets alerted for the wrong variant entirely

What the subscription record holds

One record per shopper per variant, tied to a location and checked fresh before any alert goes out.

Variant subscription
The exact ProductVariant a shopper subscribed to — never the parent product alone.
Location scope
The location(s) where the variant must be sellable, from Shopify's InventoryLevel data.
Sellable check
A fresh inventory recheck run immediately before sending, not the count from when the webhook first fired.
Alert count
Whether this subscription has already received its one alert; a fired subscription never fires twice.
Consent record
The customer's opt-in captured at subscription time, required before any message sends.
Send log
Every alert attempt, with its outcome: sent, held on a stale inventory read, or already fulfilled.

What happens between a restock and an alert

Every subscription is rechecked against live inventory before it fires.

  1. A shopper subscribes

The shopper picks the exact variant and confirms consent to be messaged on WhatsApp.

  2. Shopify reports inventory movement

VARIANTS_IN_STOCK or an INVENTORY_LEVELS_UPDATE signals a possible restock.

  3. Inventory is rechecked at send time

Morasel re-reads the InventoryLevel for the subscribed variant and location right before sending, not from the original webhook.

  4. Sellability is confirmed

The alert only fires if the variant is sellable at one of the customer's configured locations now.

  5. The one alert sends

The subscription fires exactly once; it is marked fulfilled immediately after sending.

  6. The outcome is logged

Sent, held, or already-fulfilled — every subscription's outcome is recorded.

What the customer sees

One subscribe request, one alert, once the variant is actually sellable.

What the team sees

Every active subscription, its location scope, and why an alert fired or didn't, in one place.

  • A list of active variant subscriptions, grouped by product and location
  • A stale-inventory hold log, showing which alerts waited for a fresh sellable check
  • Fulfilled subscriptions marked closed so the same customer isn't re-alerted
  • The configured locations that count as sellable, editable per workspace

What this does not do

Morasel does not call this real-time unless the measured freshness supports it, and never sends an alert from a raw inventory-count change alone — a variant must pass a fresh sellable check at send time first.

Let shoppers subscribe by variant, and send one alert only once it's checked sellable where it counts.

Back-in-stock alert questions

Does the alert fire the moment inventory changes?

No. Morasel rechecks sellable inventory at the subscribed location right before sending, so a webhook alone never triggers a message.

Can a shopper get more than one alert?

No. Each subscription sends exactly one alert and is then marked fulfilled.

What if the variant is only in stock at a warehouse that doesn't sell to me?

The alert only fires when the variant is sellable at the location(s) configured for that customer.

Does a subscription mean the shopper agreed to marketing messages?

The alert itself is tied to the specific subscription and consent captured at signup — Shopify data alone is never treated as WhatsApp consent.

Can a shopper subscribe to more than one variant?

Yes. Size, color, or any other variant option can each carry its own subscription and its own single alert.

Do back-in-stock alerts cost per subscriber?

No — the subscriber list is not metered. Back-in-stock alerts run on your Morasel subscription — Core $49, Pro $99, Max $199, Enterprise on request. WhatsApp usage is billed separately from a prepaid wallet at Meta's official rates.
